Children first dental visit

The Canadian Dental Association recommends that children visit the dentist by their first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth appearing. Early visits are less about finding problems and more about building a relationship with dental care — one that shapes a child's attitude toward oral health for the rest of their life.

Before the appointment, talk to your child about what will happen in simple, positive terms. Avoid words like "pain," "needle," or "drill" — even with reassurance, these words plant seeds of anxiety. Instead, frame the visit as a check-up where the dentist counts their teeth and helps keep them healthy.

At Smile Lounge Dentistry, we create a welcoming environment for young patients. During a first visit, we typically do a gentle examination of the teeth, gums, jaw, and bite. Depending on the child's age and cooperation, we may perform a cleaning or apply fluoride. We also review brushing and flossing techniques with parents.

If your child is nervous, that is completely normal. Our team has experience with anxious children and knows how to pace the appointment, take breaks when needed, and use age-appropriate language to explain what we are doing. We never rush a child through a first visit.

Starting dental visits early also means we can detect and address issues like early tooth decay, crowding, or delayed eruption before they become more complex problems. Baby teeth matter — they hold space for permanent teeth and support speech development. Do not wait for a problem before booking that first appointment.
